What We'll Be RidingBoth of us will be riding our own BMW motorcycles. A BMW R800GS and a BMW R1200GS Adventure.
This is a great choice and the expedition will prove to be a fantastic opportunity for us to compare the individual characteristics of each model. Paul's R1200 GS is a proven mile muncher, is shaft driven and is capable of covering distances quickly and efficiently, although it is by far a much heavier machine, so is less nimble on rougher ground.
In contrast Angus' F800 GS is much lighter and far more agile which makes it better suited to the terrain once we arrive in Africa; although a slightly smaller engine, because of it's lightness, we think the power to weight ratios will be about the same. It has a smaller tank range meaning we may have to siphon fuel from one to the other.
ModificationsIn preparation we will be carrying out some modifications.
These will include mounting strong aluminium panniers fitted with specially made brackets to enable us to carry two 10 litre jerry cans to each bike. Where we are going you can never have too much fuel or water! And on occasions this may still not be enough! Additional aluminium protection plating such as extra sump guards will also be fitted.
Because of some of the terrain we will also be carrying some spares such as rear shocks, rear chain (Angus' bike), spare levers and puncture kits etc. leaving just about enough room for a spare t-shirt and an extra pair of pants!
We are doing this to raise awareness for two fantastic charities - The Highland Hospice and Riders for Health - so please make a donation.
